Chief Justice Hon. Harifin A. Tumpa has issued a regulation that strongly prohibits judges to sleep and use cellular phones while examining cases in the court room.

Judges are also obliged to speak politely. The Supreme Court Regulation is to respond the finding of the Commission III in the parliament highlighting few judges who fall asleep in the court room.

“I’ve signed (the regulation),” said Harifin to the press on Friday (20/11) in the Supreme Court building, Medan Merdeka Street, Jakarta.

Harifin further said that judges violating this regulation would be punished by the supervision division in the Supreme Court. “This is ethical and moral violation,” he said while admitting that there were several judges in subordinate courts who frequently showed improper conducts.

“This (regulation) is an early warning,” Harifin added.

Responding to Chief Justice’s statement, Director General of Badilag, Wahyu Widiana, urges Religious Courts judges to pay much attention to this regulation.

“I suggest people who find Religious Court judges falling asleep, using cell phones and speaking impolitely, to immediately report them to the Supreme Court,” Wahyu told badilag.net. (cho)
