To reduce the level of family violence mostly affecting and victimizing women and children, the Supreme Court signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry for women’s empowerment and children protection, General Attorney Office, the Indonesian Police, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and the Ministry for Social Affairs.

The signing coincided with the commemoration of Mother’s Day that is celebrated today, December 22. President Susilo Bambang Yudhono attended the commemoration ceremony centered in Indonesian Mini Garden (Taman Mini), Jakarta. Chief of the Constitutional Court, Ministers and Jakarta Governor were also in attendance.

Women activists urged that women had to be more involved in public roles and decision making process. Women should be equal partners for their male counterparts in family and society life.

In his welcome speech, President Yudhoyono said that the MoU was a serious step to diminish the number of violence on women and children in Indonesia. This MoU, he said as quoted by mahkamahagung.go.id, was effective to deal with violence cases on women and children since the MoU enabled law enforcers to uphold law on the cases systematically, comprehensively, and continuously.
