The training on Syari’ah Economy for the Religious Court judges held in the University of Ibnu Saud, Riyadh, appears to be extended. The first training which was held from December 17, 2008 until January 17, 2009 involving 36 judges from religious courts had gained many advantages.

This was the conclusion of an informal meeting between the Dean of Ma’had Qadla from the University of Ibnu Saud and Deputy Chief Justice for Religious Courts. The meeting was held on Friday (29/1) in Le Meridien Hotel, Jakarta. The Dean was accompanied by the Dean Assistant, while Deputy Chief Justice came with the Secretary of the Supreme Court and DG of Badilag.

The meeting was sponsored by the Embassy of Saudi Arabia by performing welcoming ceremony on behalf of the visit of the Dean of the Ma’had in Jakarta. Attending this ceremony were the Ambassador of the Kingdom, Abdulrahman Mohammed Amen A. Al-Khayyat and the staff as well as the Director of Arabian-Islamic Science Institute (LIPIA), Jakarta, DR. Abdullah HM Al-Sulaimi along with his staff.

The initiator behind this meeting was actually Bukhari Yusuf, Lc, the member of the House of Representatives who also attended the meeting and played as a ‘bridge’ between Deputy Chief Justice and Saudi Arabian representatives. As the Director of Jakarta-based Sharia Consulting Center, Bukhari has a close connection with several Saudi Arabian functionaries.

The training last year was also part of Bukhari’s role along with his colleague, Salim Segaf Al-Jufri, who was then the Ambassador of Indonesia to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Oman Sultanate.

Delivering Speech

In the meeting, Deputy Chief Justice Andi Syamsu Alam, stated that delegating judges to Riyadh last year had gained many advantages. Besides achieving Islamic knowledge which is strongly connected to the religious judges’ duties, the participants of the training were also motivated to explore Islamic law from the original sources.” He explained.

Adding his statement, Andi acknowledged that the participants got more religious experience when they were particularly invited by the Kingdom of Saudi to perform pilgrim following the training. “The training program contributed in strengthening relationship between two countries. That is why we need to extend this program.” Andi asserted.

Meanwhile, Bukhari, who is expert in Arabic, suggested that in the future there should be such program for particular Supreme Courts elites even only for 1 to 2 weeks training.

Training Arabic Language

During his discussion with Bukhari and DR. Abdullah Al-Sulaimi, the Director General of Badilag, Wahyu Widiana stated that the program of enhancing Arabic skills for judges and staff of religious courts have been currently developing. The examples are emerging Arabic website, mapping Arabic skills among religious court apparatus, as well as seminar and training in Arabic. Wahyu also proposed to the Director of LIPIA to visit his office. In turn, the Director who is friendly and expert in English graciously responded to the proposal. Meanwhile, Bukhari suggested there would be a specific talk for this issue since he affirmed that DR. Abdullah Al-Sualiami will absolutely support this idea.

The Next Step

Due to a limited time, Deputy Chief Justice asked the DG of Badilag to take significant steps preparing the recruitment for the training participants, while the Deputy will meet the Supreme Court elites to issue an official letter to the University of Ibnu Saud, Riyadh. The DG of Badilag, the Secretary of the Supreme Court, and Deputy Chief Justice agreed to decide that the participants have to have enough skills in Arabic language, because there would not be such translation into Indonesian language during the training.

“Please arrange immediate recruitment!” asked the Secretary of the Supreme Court to the DG of Badilag. DG affirmed that Badilag now has mapped out the judges and officials all around Indonesia who are expert in Arabic language.

“Two months ago, we collected the data on this issue in behalf of developing arabic.badilag.net    which has worked from December 12”, said DG of Badilag while adding that the website will release the letter after a while informing that those who feel expert in Arabic should get ready for the recruitment.” (shofa qolbi)
