Judges to foster esprit de corps

Jakarta | badilag.net/english (24/3)

Judges are warned to avoid the feelings of jealousy and envy to each other. Judges must not be arrogant. “It is important to foster esprit de corps,” said Chief Justice Hon. Harifin Andi Tumpa in the middle of 57th commemoration of IKAHI (Association of Indonesian Judges) on Thursday (23/3/10) in the Supreme Court Building, Jakarta.

“Arrogance, according to the Prophet Muhammad, is denying the truth and underestimating other people,” Chief Justice said.

.

On one side, Harifin admitted that he was happy with the encouraging development of the judges’ association. He cited examples of the run-well social fund which is managed by this association and the existence of monthly journal ‘Varia Peradilan’.

But on the other side, Chief Justice feels sad to see case brokerages are still in existence within the institution he leads. “Perhaps the case brokers are a few in the Supreme Court. But frankly I’m sad. I often get report on this,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of IKAHI, Abdul Kadir Mappong said IKAHI had made significant efforts in running judicial reform. However, Abdul kadir acknowledged the rate of public confidence towards judiciary is still low. Therefore he asked all judges to enhance the capability, maintain the integrity and stay professional.

IKAHI was established on 20 March 1953 and is a sole organization for all Indonesian judges.
