Small things are usually neglected whereas change for the better generally begins from trivial things. Leadership and judges of Religious Courts are therefore expected to be always sensitive to those much-ignored things.

Director General of Badilag Wahyu Widiana made those statements on the ceremony entitled “HISSI (Association of Indonesia Sharia Scientists and Scholars) at glance, Code of ethics and judges’ role in handling cases” on Friday (26/3/10) in Theater room of Sharia and Law Faculty, The State Islamic University Jakarta.

This ceremony was attended by judges from greater Jakarta. Leadership of Badilag was also seen attending the meeting.

“Don’t let yourselves (judges) fall asleep while hearing cases in the court rooms,” Wahyu said.

Wahyu asserted the Supreme Court was very strict with its policies on monitoring judges’ behavior. A number of judges who have been imposed various punishments for violating code of ethics and code of conduct is an obvious example, he said.

“If the violation (of code of ethics) is considered too disturbing, (the Court) will ‘amputate’, he added.

Moreover, he went on, the Supreme Court leadership is highly responsive to address complaints from public including trivial things shown by judges when handling cases.

The Supreme Court has issued a letter Nr. 141/KMA/XI/2009 concerning with guidance a judge must obey when hearing, handling and deciding cases.

The guidance says that when hearing cases judges must not wear sunglasses, use cellphones, and fall asleep. In addition, judges must speak polite and right Bahasa Indonesia.
