Director General of Badilag, Wahyu Widiana, has been taking part in national coordinating meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and governors throughout Indonesia from Monday (19/4) to Wednesday (21/4) in Tampaksiring Palace Gianyar, Bali. DG of Badilag was especially invited to the meeting to present what Religious Courts have been doing to ensure the access to justice for the poor and marginalized.
Law enforcement and access to justice for all becomes one of four national strategic programs that are discussed in the meeting which is also attended by all cabinet ministers, provincial legislative councils chairpersons, and state enterprises leaders.
.National strategy on access to justice focuses on, among others, legal aid for the poor and marginalized to have much broader access to courts in order to uphold legal certainty and justice for all.
Religious Courts have been playing a significant role in assuring and promoting access to justice for poor and marginalized people by providing prodeo (free of charge) case procedures and circuit court for people living in remote areas.
On a number of occasions, Wahyu Widiana, always pushes Religious Courts to facilitate and uphold prodeo procedures and circuit court. “Court is basically passive in handling cases. But I think courts should be active in promoting and facilitating prodeo and circuit court to secure access to justice for the poor,” he once said.
Badilag has also been formulating a guideline for legal aid that will be used by Religious Courts all over Indonesia.
