Chief Justice Attends the Asian Judges’ Symposium on Environment

Chief Justice of the Indonesia’s Supreme Court, Harifin A. Tumpa, attended the Asian judges’ symposium on environmental decision making, rule of law and environmental justice, which was held in Auditorium of Asian Development Bank Headquarters, Manila the Philippines from 28 to 29 July 2010.

On his address, Chief Justice said court plays a more important role in preserving the environmental functions and promoting good governance for sustainable development as well as protecting the interests of future generation.

The role is becoming much more important since actions of anti-environment and environmental destruction accelerate more rapidly that the developments of positive laws of environment.

Based on the importance of the court’s role, the Indonesia’s Supreme Court, according to Chief Justice, has prepared judges and court proceedings that are in line with the efforts of protecting ecosystem, sustainable development and good governance.

Chief Justice also said there should be wider and closer cooperation among Asian judges to develop what is so-called ‘green bench’. The Supreme Court, he said, has a representative judge training center to facilitate that kind of meeting. “Therefore, if necessary we are ready to host a meeting for Chief Justices across ASEAN next year,” Harifin said as quoted by mahkamahagung.go.id.
