Supreme Court, Federal Court and Family Court signed MoU

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of the Federal Court and Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), at the Supreme Court’s office, Jakarta, on Thursday (09/29/2011).

"I am so happy knowing that the agreements in the field of law with Federal Court and Family Court of Australia will be renewed," Chief Justice Harifin Tumpa said before the Supreme Court leaders, Chief Justices of the Supreme Court, officials of 1st and 2nd echelon, the Honorable Ambassador of Australia, and other invitees.

The Supreme Court and the Federal Court have cooperating since 2004. The cooperation comprises of cases settlement, case management, judicial transparency, justice and financial management and improvement of public confidence.

Meanwhile, the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Indonesian Supreme Court and the Family Court just have been conducted, although the two parties actually have collaborated in recent years.

Chief Justice stated that the MoU provides many benefits that can be measured from the implementation of priority programs which are being developed by the Supreme Court. This cooperation is very strategic because it has paid off, especially on changes of strategy in solving the case settlement programs, leadership, information disclosure and so forth.

Further, Chief Justice stated that Indonesian and Australian judicature are actually both facing problems related to acces to justice and trying  hard to solve it.

One effort to restore the public trust, Chief Justice said that there will be a clerks’ training on code of ethics and conduct.

On the other hand, Chief Justice of the Federal Court, Patrick Keane also admitted to be happy with this MoU.

"This partnership is manifestation of a strong commitment to reform the judiciary," he said.

With this MoU, the Chief Justice of the Federal Court, Patrick Keane confirmed, the parties can cooperate to share their experiences and facilitate each other.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of the Family Court, Diana Bryant stated that a mediation training will be held. It will involve the Family Court of Australia and the Religious Courts. This training is more focused on the real needs of the Religious Courts in the resolution of matrimonial property matters, child custody, guardianship and disability.

"The training is intended to find ways to mediate effectively and efficiently," said Diana Bryant.

On this occasion, the Director General of the Religious Courts, Wahyu Widiana also accompanied Chief Justice. He is acquainted with Patrick Keane, who recently became Chief Justice of the Federal Court.
