Indonesia – Sudan Sign an important MoU

The Hon. Dr. Harifin A. Tumpa, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia and HE. Galal ed Dien Mohammed Othman, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Sudan sign an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), in Jakarta, at Kusuma Admaja Room, Thursday (17/11/2011).
Some chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia, justices, officials of echelon I, Vice Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Sudan, HE. Abdurrahman Asy-Syarfi, the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan, HE. Dr. Mohammed Ali Abdulah, and Secretary General of Judge Affairs, HE. Dr. Ali Abdullah, also attend the ceremony of signing.
The main purpose of this MoU is to establish a framework to enhance effective cooperation between the parties through exchange of information and capacity building programs.
The Directorate General of the Religious Courts (well-known as Badilag) which is led by Wahyu Widiana, will play an important role in implementing the MoU. It serves as the coordinator for the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia. It has an urgent responsibility to open a channel of communication for other coordinator to ensure accurate flow of information regarding the cooperation. Besides, it also holds annual consultation to assess and to review the implementation of the MoU.
.The MoU which consists of eight articles stipulates some areas of the cooperation, namely (i) education, training and comparative study, (ii) exchange visit, seminar, and workshop, (iii) exchange of information especially in the application and development of sharia law in both countries.
The Secretary General of Judges Affairs is the coordinator for the Supreme Court of the Republic of Sudan. It also performs the same responsibility as Badilag does.
The MoU is available in three languages, Bahasa Indonesia, Arabic and English. All versions of the MoU are equally authentic. In case of any divergence of interpretation, the English version shall prevail.
Director General’s Response
The Director General of the Religious Courts, Wahyu Widiana said that the MoU will be valuable to strengthen the competence of the Religious Courts.
“By getting training and course as well as comparative study provided in this cooperation will enable our judges to enhance their understanding and knowledge in examining and deciding sharia law,” he said.
He also said that Badilag as the coordinator shall pay serious attention regarding the implementation of the MoU.
