The Supreme Court Has Six New Justices

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Honorable Harifin A Tumpa innaugurated and swore in six justices at the office of the Supreme Court, at Kusuma Atmadja Room, last Wednesday (11/09/2011). The innauguration ceremony was also attended by Vice-Chief Justice for Judicial and Non-Judicial Affairs, the Deputy Chief Justices, the Justices, all officials of echelon I and II, and the invitees.
The six justices were the Honorable Suhadi, SH, MH., the Honorable Prof. Dr. Gayus Lumbuun, SH, MH., the Honorable Dr. H. Andi Samsan Nganro, SH, MH., the Honorable Dr. Nurul Elmiyah, SH, MH., the Honorable Drs. Dudu Duswara Machmudin, SH, MH., and the Honorable Dr. H. M. Hari Jatmiko, SH, MH.
Before finally being inaugurated and sworn in, the six justices has undergone a quite long selection process.
. At first, they enrolled at the Judicial Commission (KY). Through a series of tests, the Judicial Commission then passed 18 candidates of tens of applicants to the Commission III of the House Representative.
The House Representatives then held a fit and proper test to screen candidates for Supreme Court justices who were actually qualified. On Thursday (09/29/2011), the Commission III of House Representatives elected six names by voting.
A week later (10/04/2011), in the plenary session, the House decided the six elected candidates for the Supreme Court justices. The next process, the House sent the six names to the President to be set as the Supreme Justices. And after the President issued a decree, the Chief Justice swore in and took their oath.
The six justices have different background of professions. Previously, the Honorable Suhadi served as the Clerk of the Supreme Court and The Honorable Andi Samsan Nganro was the Deputy Chief Justice of the Samarinda High Court.
Meanwhile, Gayus Lumbuun previously was a member of Parliament, Nurul Elmiyah was a lecturer of Faculty of Law at University of Indonesia, the Honorable Dudu Duswara Machmudin was the Ad Hoc Judge of Anti-Corruption and Hary Jatmiko was the tax court judge.
From gender perspective, five of the six justices were men. The only female justices among them is the Honorable Nurul Elmiyah.
With the addition of six new justices, the Supreme Court has 54 justices. The Chief Justice hoped that the Justices are able to accelerate the settlement process of cases backlog, either cassation or review in the Supreme Court.
