Chief Justice of the Indonesian Supreme Court, Dr. Harifin A. Tumpa, SH, MH received an invitation to participate in and give a presentation on the 4th conference of the International Association for Court Administration (IACA) that will be held next November in Istanbul, Turkey.

It was Richard Foster, IACA Vice President for Southern Asia and Australia, who directly conveyed the invitation to the Chief Justice at his working room this morning.

Richard, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Family Court of Australia (FCoA), said the Chief Justice was invited to the conference since the Indonesian Supreme Court had made much progress particularly on transparency and judicial reform.

“That’s why we request the chief Justice to give a presentation on transparency and Indonesian Judicial System,” Richard Said.

Chief Justice’s Response.

Chief Justice of the Republic of Indonesia responded well to the IACA’s invitation saying he would come to the international conference in Istanbul this year.

“I myself will attend the conference. But should anything unexpected come up, I will send a delegate,” Harifin Tumpa said.

Concerning request to host the upcoming IACA’s meeting, Harifin said, “We will have to discuss it with the leadership in the Supreme Court.”

On this occasion, Harifin promptly asked Director General of Badilag, Wahyu Widiana to gather more detailed information on this scheduled IACA’s meeting to be further discussed within the Supreme Court’s leadership.

Richard Foster and the delegates seemed satisfied with the Chief Justice’s response. He promised to soon send detailed information of the meeting.

A Brief of IACA.

IACA is an international association for court administrators. It was established in the United States in 2004.

One of this association’s objectives is to enhance professionalism of court administrators throughout the world in providing services to pubic. Its activities therefore are concerned much with conferences, seminars, researches, sponsorships of international trainings, journal and website publishing, etc.

IACA held several International conferences; Ljubljana, Slovenia (2004), Verona, Italy (2006), and Dublin, Ireland (2008). The 2009 conference that will take place in Istanbul, Turkey is the 4th conference.

IACA is managed by Executive Board, Advisory Council and Advisory Board. Executive Board consists of President, Markus B Zimmer (This email address is being protected from spambots. IACA has assisted Indonesian Courts in performing trainings, short courses and comparative studies. A short course followed by judges and the Supreme Court’s officials in Washington DC and Maryland early this year, for example, was much aided by IACA’s members such as Jeffrrey A Apperson and Ralph Deloach. Ralph, also an Emeritus Vice President of IACA, frequently trained judges and court officials in Indonesia.

In order to easily coordinate its activities, IACA has appointed a regional vice president who is responsible for its particular region. This vice president is also a member of Advisory Board. Regions that have appointed their Vice Presidents are Middle Asia/India, Southern Asia & Australia, Middle East, Europe/Slovenia, North America/Canada, Africa and Middle/Southern America. In addition, IACA has its Vice President for International association.
