Two New Justices Sworn in

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Hon. Harifin A. Tumpa, inaugurated Sofyan Sitompul dan Sri Murwahyuni as Supreme Court justices, today (Tuesday, 23/11) after both justices obtained the most votes in a closed election in the Commission III of the Parliament, some time ago.

Before serving as a justice, Sri Murwahyuni was a judge at Surabaya High Court and was the only female candidate for the Court justices. Meanwhile Sofyan Sitompul was an official at Inspectorate General of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights concerning on personnel affairs.

“I hope that with the inauguration of these two justices, cases in the Supreme Court can be finalized faster,” Chief Justice said, answering reporters’ questions. .

Seminar on Access to Indonesian Religious Court

Chief Justice, the Hon. Harifin A. Tumpa, opened and delivered a keynote speech at a seminar on access to religious court, Tuesday (16/11) at Nikko Hotel Jakarta. The seminar was held by Van Vollenhoven Institute (VVI), a research institute managed by Leiden University, the Netherlands.

Chief Justice said that providing justice should be interpreted in a broader meaning. In the context of religious court which mostly deals with marital cases, Harifin hoped gender equity can also be given to justice seekers.

“I’m just worried the administration of justice (would be) interpreted narrowly, only on the judicial process,” Chief Justice said. .

Supreme Court and SSR Netherlands Sign MoU
on Judge Training

The Supreme Court of Indonesia and Studiecentrum Rechpesleging the Kingdom of Netherlands (SSR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on training and internship programs for judges, on Friday, 19 November 2010. The signing of MoU was attended by Chief Justice, Vice Chief Justice for Judicial Matters, Deputy Chief Justice for the Development, Head of the Supreme Court’s Training Center, and representatives of the Netherlands SSR.

Chief Justice, the Hon. Harifin A. Tumpa, on his speech, hoped that through the MoU, the training quality for Indonesian judges could be enhanced. Meanwhile, the Netherlands SSR acknowledged that they were proud of the cooperation which is aimed to improve the quality of justice.

Chief Justice and Dutch Judges Discuss Training Curriculum for Judge Candidates

Chief Justice of Indonesia’s Supreme Court, the Hon. Harifin A. Tumpa, accompanied with Deputy Chief Justices and Coordinator of the Court’s Judicial Reform Team received Dutch senior judges and a delegation of Training and Study Center for the Judiciary, on Monday, 15 November 2010.

The meeting between judges and justices of the two countries discussed the implementation of training curriculum and internship for Indonesian judge candidates.

One focus of the Supreme Court’s Blue Print is on developing a continuous training structure for judge candidates and judges of special courts. Indonesia’s Supreme Court is supporting training needs assessment aimed at developing new curriculum that meets institutional and public needs.

Indonesia’s Supreme Court Participates in International Summit of High Courts in Istanbul Turkey

Turkey is holding an International Summit of High Courts on 1-3 November 2010. Chief Justice of Indonesia’s Supreme Court, the Hon. Harifin A. Tumpa, along with 18 other chief justices around the world, also attends the conference. The event is co-organized by the Presidency of the Court of Cassation in Turkey and UNDP Turkey.

The Chief Justice said this meeting is important for Indonesia. He added the committee of the event bears all transportation and accommodation costs of Indonesian delegation. A number of crucial issues will be discussed in this meeting. The Chief Justice was planned to present his paper on Provision of Court Information to the Public. .
