Director General of Badilag, Wahyu Widiana, urged universities to observe the services provided by Religious Courts across Indonesia. This, according to Wahyu, is important for the courts to improve their services for the public.

“We welcome university students to monitor all services provided at Religious Courts. We’ll also be very happy if students from any universities hold their final assignments such as Kuliah Kerja Sosial (Practical and Social Lecture) at the courts. The students can observe and monitor the services there,” Wahyu Widiana said when giving a public lecture at IAIN (The State Institute for Islamic Studies) Sumatera Utara, Medan, last Friday (24/12).

Western perceptions of Islam in Indonesia are often dominated by images of radical minorities seeking a shari’ah state. In reality, however, mainstream Islamic institutions have played an important part in the post-Soeharto process of democratisation and institutional reform. Among them are Indonesia’s Islamic courts, the Pengadilan Agama or Religious Courts.

In a ground-breaking new Lowy Institute Paper, 'Courting reform: Indonesia’s Islamic courts and justice for the poor', Cate Sumner and Tim Lindsey explore how the Islamic courts have embraced reform within a judicial system notorious for corruption and incompetence, taking the lead in efforts to deliver decisions that are more accessible, transparent and fair, especially for women and the poor.

Criteria for Success of Mediation in Religious Courts Should be Reviewed

Jakarta | badilag.net/english

The success of mediation in Religious Courts should not properly be measured by the only number of divorce. There are many divorce connected problems waiting to mediate, such as child custody, division of joint property, and determination of iddah. Among many, these three areas are necessarily needed to recognize in measuring the success of mediation in Religious Courts.

This idea raised in the first night discussion of the Workshop on Mediation Module Preparation: Responding the Needs of Women and Children, held at the Millennium Hotel, Jakarta, November 30 to December 3. The workshop was collaborating program between DG Badilag, The Asia Foundation and the Center for Women's Studies (PSW) UIN Yogyakarta.
