Six New Justices Installed

Chief Justice Harifin A. Tumpa inaugurated six new Supreme Court Justices on Wednesday (7/4) in Jakarta. With these new justices, the Supreme Court now has 49 justices and is highly hoped to reduce the number of case log and accelerate case settlements in the Court.

Chief justice hoped that justices could provide better examples for other judges and court officers. Justices were also told to avoid meeting the parties whose cases were being examined by the Court.

What is driving the increase in the number of people divorcing? Why are more people processing their divorce through the courts?

Those are the two questions becoming one of the main discussions of English Meeting Club (EMC) held by Badilag on Thursday (1/4). Prof. Mark Cammack, Professor from Southwestern Law School, Los Angeles, became the keynote speaker on the meeting.

Legal Clinics in Indonesian Courts

AusAID facilitated the making of legal aid guidelines that can be used by judiciaries under the Indonesian Supreme Court by holding a workshop on Tuesday (31/3) to obtain as many inputs as possible for the guide lines to support the establishment of legal clinics in courts as stipulated by the Law.

The workshop which was held in Jakarta was attended representatives from Bappenas, Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, 4 court jurisdictions, Administrative Bureau in the Supreme Court, NGOs, Legal Aid Foundations and Advocates. Director General of Badilag, Wahyu Widiana, was also seen attending the meeting accompanied by Vice Chief Judge of Jakarta High Religious Court, Zainuddin Fajari and Chief Judges of East and South Jakarta Religious Court.

Small things are usually neglected whereas change for the better generally begins from trivial things. Leadership and judges of Religious Courts are therefore expected to be always sensitive to those much-ignored things.
