Chief Justice: Law enforcement should be free from any pressure

Chief Justice, Hon. Harifin A. Tumpa said judges’ works have been public spotlight lately. Instead of abiding by the applying laws, People tend to resolve their cases through people power. This trend has put judges on the corner. Therefore, it is important for judges to solidly stick to the law principles, Harifin said as reported by mahkamahagung.go.id.

Harifin expects that law enforcement in Indonesia is free from any pressure. People should not press judges in deciding cases. Referring to a number of verdicts that were strongly criticized for punishing thieves of cacao and watermelon, for example, Chief Justice said the decisions were light and have been handed down with strong reasoning and consideration.

Director General of Badilag urged all officials and officers in Badilag (Religious Courts Body in the Supreme Court) to evaluate their work performance during 2009.

“We still have many weaknesses. Don’t be easily satisfied,” Wahyu said before all Badilag apparatus in the year-end evaluation meeting yesterday (28/12).

Badilag, Wahyu added, carried out its work programs well in 2009 but he expected the performance to be much better in the next year. He further said the positive appreciation that Badilag received from a considerable number of figures and institutions nationally and internationally had to be made as motivation and encouragement to provide much better services.

Survey of integrity on public sector during 2009 released by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) put the Supreme Court in the group of 15 institutions with the lowest level of integrity. The annual survey conducted during April-September 2009 involved 11.413 respondents from several cities in Indonesia including central and district areas.

Responding to the survey, the Director General of Badilag, Wahyu Widiana, asks Religious Courts apparatus not to see the survey from a negative perspective. Conversely, he urges all apparatus to enhance the quality of public services despite the validity of the survey method. “Make the result of the survey as the instrument to do the better things for public,” said Wahyu Widiana to badilag.net.

Preventing Family Violence, the Supreme Court signs MoU

To reduce the level of family violence mostly affecting and victimizing women and children, the Supreme Court signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry for women’s empowerment and children protection, General Attorney Office, the Indonesian Police, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and the Ministry for Social Affairs.

The signing coincided with the commemoration of Mother’s Day that is celebrated today, December 22. President Susilo Bambang Yudhono attended the commemoration ceremony centered in Indonesian Mini Garden (Taman Mini), Jakarta. Chief of the Constitutional Court, Ministers and Jakarta Governor were also in attendance.
